Now get your outer wood off cuts from the good G board that you cut earlier. Get the wood stain out that you have chosen and apply to the off cut. This will now give you an indication of the depth and colour of your stain and how many coats of stain you will need to achieve your chosen colour. |
Apply your stain to the racetrack. I went with a mahogany red stain. One coat was all that was required to reach the depth and colour that I desired. When the stain is dry (12-24hrs), apply 4 coats of clear high gloss lacquer (for a good protective finish). Lightly sand the lacquer in between coats. |
We are now going to make the railing for our poker table. Get the 4" top rail and 1.5" bottom rail that we cut earlier. Place the 4" top rail on a table and then place the 1.5" bottom rail over the top of the 4" rail. Hold in place with clamps. |
Get your 8g X 25mm wood screws and a 1.5 - 2mm drill bit. We are now going to secure the two rails together. On your drill bit mark 25mm on it so that when you drill your holes, you don't go through the board. Now drill your holes a couple of inches apart all the way around your rail and screw in your wood screws. I used approximately 45 - 50 wood screws. Put the railing aside as we will attach the foam and vinyl later. |
Now get your centre playing board which you cut from your good G board. We are now going to lay the High Density Closed Cell 1/4" thick foam. Do this step outside as the foam glue is strong smelling. Apply the glue to the plywood board and also to the back of the foam. Wait for the glue to go tacky (about 3-4 minutes) and then place the foam on the board. Wait for an hour as to let the glue set properly. We use closed cell foam here as this type of foam has water repellent properties, in case of accidental drink spills during the poker game. |
Trim the edges of the foam with a stanley knife so that the foam is flush with the edge of the board. |
Lay your velveteen on the floor and the place the playing board, foam side down on the velveteen. Begin to staple the velveteen to the board, beginning at the centre of one of the long sides, then proceed to the opposite long side and repeat. Maintain tension on the velveteen at all times in order to get a wrinkle free finish. Then proceed to staple the arcs. Always bunch the velveteen towards the last staple. When you have finished stapling the velveteen to the board, trim off any excess velveteen near the staple line.
Here is the finished playing surface. Now scotch guard the velveteen to protect against drink spills. Notice NO WRINKLES. |
Now get your High Density 1" thick foam and lay it on the ground. Get the rail that we made earlier and lay the 4" wide side of the rail (top rail) down onto the foam. |
We want to now draw our edges on the foam. These edges will be slightly oversize, not on rail edges, as they will fold under the rail to give a nice rounded feel to the rail. The math to work out our edges is : Inner wood thickness is 17.5mm (3/4"), so we want to add a 1/4" in length from the inner edge of the rail. Thus total length from inner rail edge is 3/4" + 1/4" = 1". Outer wood thickness is 17.5mm + 18mm = 35.5mm (1 1/2"), so we ant to add a 1/4" in length from the outer edge of the rail. Thus total length from the outer rail edge is 1 1/2" + 1/4" = 1 3/4". Now glue the rail to the foam using the foam glue. |
